Hyattsville has one of the better-preserved older housing stocks in the inner Washington suburbs — Victorian houses, craftsman bungalows and early twentieth-century frame homes in a walkable historic core, with later development around it.

For a plumber that is very familiar territory. Original galvanized supply corroding from the inside, cast iron drainage narrowed by scale, plaster-and-lath walls, and fixture roughs that predate modern standards. It is essentially the same problem set as pre-war Catonsville.

It is also a town where people restore rather than replace, so a good share of what we do here is repiping and system upgrades bundled into renovation projects while walls are already open.

What we find in Hyattsville homes

Whole-House Repiping at a home in Hyattsville, MD
On a call in Hyattsville.

Victorian and craftsman stock

Original galvanized and cast iron in houses altered by successive owners over a century. Where different metals meet without proper separation, corrosion accelerates at the junction.

Restoration culture

Owners here invest in their houses. Repiping while walls are open, correcting improvised venting from earlier work, and getting valve depth right before tile.

Mature trees over old laterals

Established streets with substantial tree cover over jointed clay sewer pipe. Root intrusion is a common cause of recurring backups.

Neighborhoods and landmarks we work around

We cover all of Hyattsville and the surrounding Prince George's County communities, including 20781, 20782, 20783. Areas we are in regularly:

Plumbing questions from Hyattsville

How do I know if I still have galvanized supply?

Look where the water service enters the basement. Galvanized is dull grey threaded steel and a magnet sticks to it; copper is reddish-brown with soldered joints. In a house of this era you may well find both, and the junction between them is worth a look.

Should I repipe during a renovation?

If the house is on galvanized, almost certainly for any section the renovation exposes. Access is the expensive part of repiping and the renovation gives it to you for free.

Can you line a sewer without disturbing my trees?

Usually. Trenchless lining is accessed through one or two small pits and rebuilds the pipe from the inside, removing the joints roots enter through without excavating near the root system.
