The sewer lateral is the pipe nobody thinks about until it is the only thing they can think about. It runs from your house, under the yard, to the county main. On most Catonsville properties built before the 1970s it is vitrified clay in short sections with mortared joints, and it has been sitting under a maple tree for seventy years.
Clay does not rot, but the joints move. Roots find the moisture, work into the seam, and grow. Soil settles and the pipe develops a low spot where waste sits instead of flowing. What the job includes
Camera inspection and locating
We push a camera the full length of the lateral, mark the defect location on the surface with a sonde locator, and record the footage. You get to see the problem before anyone quotes a repair.
Root cutting and hydro jetting
Mechanical cutting to open the line, then jetting to strip the remaining root hair off the pipe wall. On a sound clay line this can buy years, and for some homeowners it is genuinely the right economic answer.
Trenchless pipe lining
A resin liner cured in place inside the existing pipe creates a new, jointless pipe wall — no joints means no root entry point. Access is through one or two small pits instead of a trench across the yard, which matters when the route runs under mature landscaping, a walkway or a driveway.
Spot repair
When the line is otherwise sound and one section has failed, we excavate just that section and replace it. Cheapest correct answer when the camera supports it.
Full lateral replacement
For lines that are collapsed, badly bellied over a long run, or undersized for the house, we replace with modern PVC at proper grade, add cleanouts, and restore the surface.
Permits, inspection and restoration
Baltimore County requires permits for sewer work. We pull them, schedule the inspection, and handle backfill and surface restoration so the job is closed out properly and on record for a future sale.
How we work
1. Inspect before anyone talks price
No honest sewer estimate exists without a camera. We inspect first and share the footage. If somebody quotes you a lateral replacement without putting a camera down the pipe, get a second opinion.
2. Locate and map
We mark the defect location and depth on the ground, then trace the route so you know exactly what would be disturbed by each option — the flower bed, the driveway apron, or nothing at all.
3. Lay out the real options
Usually there are two or three. We explain what each one fixes, what it does not, roughly how long it lasts, and what it costs, in writing. Then you choose. We do not use scare tactics on a pipe you cannot see.
4. Permit and schedule
We handle the Baltimore County permit and coordinate the utility markouts before any excavation. You do not deal with the county office.
5. Perform the work and re-camera
After the repair we run the camera again so you can see the finished line. That footage is worth keeping — it is real documentation if you ever sell the house.

Pipe material and condition
Clay with a few offset joints lines beautifully. A pipe that has actually collapsed cannot be lined — there is nothing left to line — and has to be dug.
Permits, restoration and access
County permit fees, utility markouts, backfill compaction and surface restoration are all real line items. We itemize them rather than hiding them in a lump sum.
What this looks like in Catonsville
Catonsville was largely built out in waves — the streetcar-era homes near Frederick Road, the post-war expansion through Oak Forest and Westchester, and the later developments toward the Beltway and Rolling Road. Can you really repair a sewer line without digging up my yard?
In many cases, yes. Cured-in-place lining rebuilds the pipe from the inside through small access pits. It requires a pipe that is still structurally intact — a fully collapsed section has to be excavated. The camera inspection is what tells us which situation you are in.
Is the sewer lateral my responsibility or the county's?
In Baltimore County the property owner is generally responsible for the lateral from the house to the connection at the public main. We will confirm where that boundary falls for your property before any work starts.
How long does a lined sewer pipe last?
Manufacturers commonly rate cured-in-place liners at 50 years. The practical advantage is more immediate: a liner is jointless, and joints are where roots get in. If root intrusion is your problem, lining removes the cause rather than the symptom.
Will my homeowners insurance cover this?
Standard policies rarely cover the pipe itself, though many cover resulting water damage, and some carriers sell a service line endorsement that does. Check your policy before assuming either way — and keep our camera footage and invoice, because carriers ask for documentation.
How long does the work take?
