Should I get a sewer scope before buying here?
On anything built before roughly 1980, yes. Standard home inspections do not include the lateral, and it is one of the few systems that can produce a large surprise shortly after settlement.
I just moved in. What should I check first?
Locate and test the main shutoff, check the water heater age on its label, look at the angle stops under every fixture, and check for staining under sinks and around toilets. That half-hour tells you most of what you need to know.
Am I on a well or public water?
Newer subdivisions here are generally on public supply; older parcels frequently are not. A pressure tank in the basement and no water meter means a well. It changes the treatment conversation entirely.
